How King of the Hill works
One spot per trade, per area. Bid for it, hold it, own the map.
In short
- A spot is one trade in one area. The King of a spot is the business whose ad shows on the map there.
- You pick one trade. You can bid for your trade's spot in any area.
- You bid in whole dollars. Your bid is what you pay each week while you're King. Your first spot can be free.
- Bid on an empty spot and you win it straight away. Bid above a $0 crown and pay to take over straight away. A paid King has 48 hours to bid higher.
- Pay by card within 24 hours of winning. Your card is saved for weekly payments.
- Your ad goes live once you've paid and we've approved your business. Every paid King gets a guaranteed 7 days. A $0 crown can be replaced as soon as a higher bidder pays.
- You can step down any time. Weeks you've already paid for aren't refunded.
- Not paying for a win is a strike. Two strikes pause your bidding.

Spots and areas
- A spot is one trade in one ad area. Each spot has one King: the business whose ad shows on the map there.
- Ad areas are every Australian council (local government area, using ABS boundaries). Rangr Dangr may also add a few custom premium areas, such as a street or shopping strip. A custom area can sit inside a council and has its own spots.
- Trades come in groups: Premium (Featured business), Cars and parking, Local services, Out and about, Pets, and Professional.
- Not allowed: gambling, adult services, vaping, alcohol delivery and political ads.
Your trade
- Each business has one trade, for example Plumber. You can hold your trade's spot in every council and custom area.
- You can't also bid on another trade's spots. A plumber can't take the baker spot.
- Featured business isn't a trade. Any business can also go for Featured business spots.
- You can change your trade in your business details. You can only do this when you don't hold, aren't winning, and aren't in a challenge for any spot in your current trade. Step down first, or let the bidding finish, then change.
Prices
- Bids are whole dollars, up to $100,000. Your bid is what you pay each week while you're King.
- Each area has an opening bid. It can be $0. Your first bid on an empty spot must be at least that.
- Your first spot can be free. Each extra spot you hold or are winning starts $1 higher. Your 2nd spot is at least $1 a week, your 3rd at least $2, your 4th at least $3, and so on. Featured business spots count too.
- Spots you already hold keep their price.
- If GST applies, it's added on top and shown at checkout.
Bidding and challenges
- On an empty spot, a confirmed bid wins straight away and the authorised card is charged. A $0 win goes live with nothing to pay.
- A higher bid on a $0 crown wins provisionally straight away: pay to take over, with no response period. Once a spot has a paid King (or an unpaid winner), anyone can bid more to challenge. The other side then has 48 hours to bid higher. Every higher bid restarts the 48 hours.
- When 48 hours pass with no higher bid, the highest bidder wins. We charge their authorised card automatically. If payment needs attention, they have 24 hours to complete it with Pay now.
- We send reminders 12 hours before a challenge closes and 6 hours before a payment is due.
- Automatic defence: set the most you're willing to pay. When you're challenged, Rangr Dangr bids for you, $5 at a time, up to that amount.
- Bidders don't see each other's names. You see "the King" or "another business".
- Use Cancel my bid to withdraw an unpaid winning bid or the leading bid in a contest. Cancelling a leading bid closes that contest; the current King keeps their existing price. Admins can also cancel unpaid bids and contests.
Winning and paying
- Review and confirm your weekly bid, then save and authorise your card securely with Stripe. Your bid is placed only after Stripe confirms the card. We charge your winning price automatically if you win, then each week while you hold the crown. Losing or cancelling before winning costs nothing.
- If a winning payment fails, use Pay now to finish securely with Stripe. If you do not pay within 24 hours, the win lapses. The King stays on, or the spot opens again.
- We may then offer the spot to the next highest bidder at their own bid. They only pay if they accept.
Going live
- Your ad goes live once you've paid and your business is approved.
- If someone else holds a $0 crown, you take over as soon as your payment is confirmed and your business is approved. If they hold a paid crown, you take over when their paid time ends. Every paid King gets a guaranteed 7 days, and any week they've already paid for is always honoured.
- Your own reign then gets its guaranteed 7 days.
Weekly payments
- While you're King you pay your bid each week. Your saved card is charged a day before each new week starts.
- If the card is declined, you get a link to pay another way. Pay before your week runs out or you lose the crown.
- If a challenge is still being decided when your next payment is due, the charge waits until it's settled. You'll have at least a day to pay.
- Defending your crown costs nothing extra. If you outbid a challenger, your new price applies from your next weekly payment.
- Without a saved card, you're asked to pay each week by the time it starts.
Stepping down
You can step down any time in the app (Menu, then Advertise your business). Your ad comes down straight away and weekly payments stop. Weeks you've already paid for aren't refunded.
Approval
- Rangr Dangr checks every business before its ads go live. Sometimes a business is approved straight away and checked soon after.
- We may send your details back for changes. Your ads are hidden until we've checked them again.
- Your paid time keeps running while your ads are hidden.
Strikes
Not paying for a win counts as a strike. Two strikes pause bidding on your account until Rangr Dangr lifts the pause.
Refunds
If a payment arrives after it's no longer due, or arrives twice, it's refunded in full automatically. Refunds take 5 to 10 days to show.
