In short
- City of Hobart and the other councils issue the fine. The amount is set by the state, and unpaid ones go to Monetary Penalties Enforcement Service (MPES).
- $51.25 for overstaying or not paying, $153.75 for No Stopping, $205 for a disabled bay.
- You have 28 days to pay, request a review or elect court, then enforcement (about half the fine (the Justice Tasmania example adds $84 to a $168 notice) extra).
- No windscreen notice? The front of the notice shows which type you have.
- Apply online or by letter to the council, once per notice. Photos of the sign and your paid session are what win a review.

Not accepted by Hobart: no change for the meter, misreading a sign, or not knowing the rule.
Meter and voucher fines come from Part 6 of the Hobart Parking By-Law No. 5 of 2018; the dollar amounts were not published online and are shown on the notice. Amounts here are penalty units times $205 and include cents, as Tasmanian notices do.
Who fines you
Council parking officers issue notices to the vehicle owner. Tasmania Police can also issue Road Rules notices.
Meter and voucher notices must be paid within 14 days, not 28. The front of the notice shows which type you have.
How to pay
- Online with the infringement number (from the day after issue)
- By phone on 1300 886 745 (Visa or Mastercard)
- In person at the Hobart Council Centre or a post office
- By mail (cheque or money order only)
- A payment plan can be requested
If you pay late
28 days to act.
Pay, request a review, nominate the driver, or elect to go to court.
The reminder.
After the deadline a reminder notice arrives with a fee.
Enforcement.
About half the fine (the Justice Tasmania example adds $84 to a $168 notice) more. After 28 days a Road Rules fine goes up and you are taken to be convicted. MPES can then suspend your driver licence and vehicle registration, deduct money, seize goods and publish your name and address.
An unpaid $51.25 overstay keeps growing, and ends with your licence or registration on the line. Pay it, or dispute it, inside the first 28 days.
Disputing a fine
Apply online or by letter to the council, once per notice. The notice is put on hold while it is reviewed, which can take up to 30 days. You can instead elect a court hearing.
Reviews that succeed usually have evidence:
- Permit number, expiry date and issuing council
- Statutory declaration naming the driver if it was not you
- Tow, roadside or mechanic invoice for a breakdown
- Hospital or doctor letter for a medical emergency
Not getting one
- Read the sign where you park, not the one across the road. Time starts the moment you stop in the bay, even if you stay in the car. See how to read Hobart parking signs.
- Tap I parked here on Rangr Dangr and set a 2P timer. If a neighbour reports an officer near your car, your phone buzzes.
