Council fines are set in penalty units. The 0.75 unit offences are $129, 1 unit is $172, 2 units are $345 and 3 units (clearway) are $518.

State road-rule fines carry the same penalty units, but the Queensland Government notes councils may set different amounts. Check the notice for the exact figure.

The penalty unit value is indexed each 1 July, so amounts rise yearly.

Who fines you

Brisbane City Council parking officers and cameras, or Queensland Police. The notice goes to the registered owner of the vehicle.

How to pay

  • Online with Visa or Mastercard using the infringement number
  • BPAY using the biller code and reference on the notice
  • By phone on 1300 012 747
  • By post (cheque or money order) to GPO Box 589, Brisbane Qld 4001, in person, or a payment plan

If you pay late

  1. 28 days to act.

Pay, request a review, nominate the driver, or elect to go to court.

  2. The reminder.

After the deadline a reminder notice arrives with a fee.

  3. Enforcement.

About $140 more. If you do nothing, council sends a reminder notice with another 28 days (a fee applies). After that the debt goes to SPER, which adds an enforcement order registration fee and an enforcement fee. SPER can then suspend your driver licence, clamp your vehicle, or seize and sell it.

An unpaid $129 overstay keeps growing, and ends with your licence or registration on the line. Pay it, or dispute it, inside the first 28 days.

Disputing a fine

Look up the notice on council's online infringement portal using the infringement number, view the photos and request a review there, or lodge a dispute online or by mail. If you were not the driver, submit a known user declaration instead of paying. Do not pay first, because a paid notice cannot be reviewed.

Reviews that succeed usually have evidence:

  • Photos of the sign, line or bay as you found it
  • A paid CellOPark session or receipt showing your registration
  • Proof you reported a faulty meter before parking
  • A valid disability permit or loading zone permit
  • Tow, breakdown or medical records if you had to stop

Not getting one

  • Read the sign where you park, not the one across the road. The limit counts from when you arrive, not from when you buy a session. See how to read Brisbane parking signs.
  • Free 15-minute parking is available in more than 7,500 on-street spaces and council car parks, but you must still register at the meter or in the app.
  • Tap I parked here on Rangr Dangr and set a 2P timer. If a neighbour reports an officer near your car, your phone buzzes.
