In short

  • Newcastle is patrolled two ways: the Mobile Parking Patrol, an electric car with plate cameras on the road since November 2023, and officers on foot with handheld devices.
  • Timed and paid parking is only enforced during the hours on the sign. Outside those hours it is free and unrestricted.
  • No Stopping, No Parking, clearways, bus zones, driveways and disabled bays are enforced all the time.
  • The two most common fines are overstaying a 1P or 2P limit and not paying in a Ticket/Phone zone. Both are $140.
  • On Rangr Dangr neighbours drop a pin when they see a ranger. Tap I parked here and you get a buzz if one is reported near your car.

How Newy enforces parking

City of Newcastle runs its own parking enforcement. The fine amounts are set by the NSW Government, not the council, and the money is collected by Revenue NSW.

The Mobile Parking Patrol

Since November 2023 the council has run an electric car fitted with licence plate recognition. It drives a street once and records every plate with a timestamp, then drives it again later. Any car still there past the limit on the sign, or without a paid session, can be booked without an officer getting out. The council says it covers more streets than people on foot and works in any weather.

Officers on foot

Rangers still walk the busy strips: Hunter Street, Darby Street, Beaumont Street in Hamilton, The Junction, the beach car parks and the Honeysuckle foreshore. They carry handheld devices, photograph the offence and the notice, and leave it on the windscreen. Since 1 December 2025 council parking officers have been trialling body-worn cameras.

When they patrol

Timed parking (1P, 2P, 4P, 8P) and Ticket/Phone parking only apply during the hours printed on the sign. In the city centre that is mostly weekday business hours and Saturday mornings, but every street is different, so read the sign where you park. Outside those hours parking is free and unrestricted, and there is nothing for a ranger to book.

Enforced at all hours, every day: No Stopping, No Parking (more than two minutes, or the driver more than three metres away), clearways, bus zones, loading zones, driveways, footpaths and nature strips, and disabled bays without a permit.

Public holidays are free unless the sign says Public holidays included.

Where they go

Rangers go where turnover matters: the paid zones in the CBD and Newcastle West, Darby Street and Cooks Hill, Beaumont Street, The Junction, Merewether and Bar Beach, Nobbys and Newcastle Beach car parks, and around John Hunter Hospital and the university. The camera car covers far more of the suburbs than officers ever could on foot, so overstays in the outer timed zones are booked more often than they used to be.

Rangr Dangr members mark ranger sightings on the live map as they happen. The Ranger risk map in the app shades the streets and hours where sightings cluster, so you can see a street's pattern before you park there.

What gets booked

These are the fines Newcastle drivers see most, from the NSW penalty notice schedule in force from 1 July 2025. NSW indexes the amounts each July, so the figure on your notice is the one that counts.

Getting a heads-up

Rangr Dangr is a live map of Newcastle run by the people who walk its streets. When someone spots a ranger they double-tap the map where they saw them and tap which way they are heading. Everyone nearby sees the pin, and it fades after 20 minutes so the map is always now.

  1. Park and pin it.

Tap I parked here when you leave the car, with an optional 2P timer.

  2. Neighbours spot the ranger.

Someone two streets over drops a sighting and the direction they are walking.

  3. You get the heads-up.

Your phone buzzes with how far away they are and which way they are heading, even with the app closed.

The rules we play by

  • No names, photos or plates. A sighting is a place and a time, not a person.
  • Never confront anyone. Rangers are doing their job. Give them room.
  • Not a live tracker. Every pin expires. Enough Not there votes clear it early.
  • Park legally. A heads-up is a reminder to move your car, not permission to overstay.

Good to know.

When do parking rangers patrol in Newcastle?

During the hours on the kerbside sign for timed and paid zones, mostly business hours in the city centre and Saturday mornings. Outside those hours parking is free. No Stopping, No Parking, bus zones, clearways and disabled bays are enforced all the time.

Does Newcastle use a car with number plate cameras?

Yes. City of Newcastle introduced the Mobile Parking Patrol in November 2023, an electric car with licence plate recognition. It records plates as it passes and comes back later to see who has overstayed.

Is it legal to tell people where a parking ranger is?

Telling a neighbour a ranger is on the street is the same as telling a mate over the fence. Rangr Dangr records a place and a time, never a person: no names, photos or plates, and every sighting expires in 20 minutes. Never confront a ranger.

How does the Rangr Dangr alert work?

Tap I parked here when you leave the car. If anyone reports a ranger inside your chosen distance, your phone buzzes, even with the app closed. Add it to your Home Screen so alerts arrive in the background; on iPhone that step is required.
