What 1P, 2P, 4P and the paid-zone signs actually mean on a Sydney sign, what an hour costs, and when it is all free anyway.

  • 10 mno stopping near an intersection without lights
  • No Stoppingeven for a minute

In short

  • 1P = one hour, 2P = two hours, 4P, and a plain P = unlimited. The clock starts when you arrive.

  • Outside the hours on the sign, parking is free and unrestricted. City of Sydney rates apply on public holidays. Other councils vary, so follow the sign.
  • The limit counts from when you park. Rangers can record your wheel position by chalk or electronically, so a short move may not reset it.

Broken meters

City of Sydney says meters are inspected daily and faults are generally fixed within 2 hours. A call centre reference number does not automatically waive a fine, so keep photos and the reference.
